Robinhood’s Crypto Volumes Jump 61% in August But the Bigger Story Is Bitstamp

Robinhood’s Crypto Volumes Jump 61% in August But the Bigger Story Is Bitstamp

Robinhood’s crypto business finally showed signs of life in August 2026. Trading volumes rebounded sharply from July, but the numbers also reveal something more important: Robinhood’s $200 million-plus acquisition of Bitstamp is increasingly changing the structure of its crypto business.

Robinhood reported $17.5 billion in crypto notional trading volume during August, a 61% jump from July’s $10.9 billion. The recovery was broad-based: crypto trading through the Robinhood app increased 72% month-on-month to $7.4 billion, while Bitstamp generated $10.1 billion, up 53%. Yet the year-on-year comparison tells a more cautious story. Total crypto volume remained 38% below August 2025, Robinhood app volumes were down 46%, and Bitstamp volumes were 30% lower. In other words, August was a strong rebound from a weak month rather than evidence that crypto trading activity has fully returned to previous levels.

Bitstamp Is Becoming More Important Than Robinhood’s Own Crypto App

The most interesting number in Robinhood’s August report may not be the 61% growth rate. It is the fact that Bitstamp generated nearly 58% of Robinhood’s total crypto volume. This is not an isolated month. During the second quarter, Robinhood recorded roughly $40 billion in total crypto trading volume, of which Bitstamp contributed about $22 billion versus approximately $18 billion from the Robinhood app. Bitstamp therefore appears to be becoming the larger trading engine inside Robinhood’s crypto ecosystem.

That matters because the two businesses provide different exposure. Robinhood historically built its crypto offering around retail users trading alongside equities and options. Bitstamp brings a much deeper institutional component. Robinhood’s Q2 disclosure showed that the overwhelming majority of Bitstamp’s volume came from institutional clients. That effectively gives Robinhood access to a part of the crypto market it previously did not dominate: professional and institutional trading infrastructure.

The Rebound Still Needs Context

A 61% monthly jump looks spectacular until investors look at the previous month. July crypto volume had fallen 33% from June to just $10.9 billion, with Robinhood app volumes declining 38% and Bitstamp activity dropping 30%. August therefore recovered much of that weakness, but total crypto activity remains considerably below the levels seen during stronger periods of 2025 and early 2026.

This distinction is important for investors following Robinhood because crypto remains highly cyclical. Trading revenue rises rapidly when Bitcoin, Ethereum and other digital assets attract speculative activity, but it can disappear just as quickly during quieter periods. Robinhood experienced this directly in the second quarter. Crypto transaction revenue fell 38% year-on-year to $100 million, even as the company reported record overall quarterly revenue of $1.31 billion, up 32%.

That would once have been a major problem for Robinhood. In 2026, it increasingly looks like evidence that the business is becoming less dependent on crypto.

Robinhood Is Becoming More Than a Trading App

The rest of Robinhood’s August numbers make this clearer. Equity notional trading volume reached $335 billion, up 68% from a year earlier, while options activity remained 50% higher year-on-year despite declining from July. The company finished August with 28.6 million funded customers, approximately 1.9 million more than a year earlier, while total platform assets climbed 26% year-on-year to $384 billion.

Robinhood is also expanding aggressively outside traditional stock and crypto trading. Its second-quarter revenue benefited from options, equities and especially event contracts, which generated $156 million in revenue during the quarter and increased more than tenfold from a year earlier. Robinhood has since expanded further into prediction markets through partnerships with Crypto.com and OG.com.

This diversification changes how investors should think about Robinhood. The original Robinhood investment thesis was heavily dependent on retail trading enthusiasm. The newer version of the company increasingly includes brokerage, crypto, institutional trading through Bitstamp, prediction markets, subscriptions, retirement accounts, margin lending, cash management and international expansion.

Crypto Could Still Become a Much Bigger Part of Robinhood

The August rebound also demonstrates why Robinhood continues investing heavily in digital assets despite lower year-on-year volumes. Crypto markets can scale extraordinarily quickly when activity returns. Robinhood’s crypto trading volumes moved from $10.9 billion in July to $17.5 billion in August without requiring the company to acquire millions of new users in a single month. If another sustained crypto bull cycle develops, that operational leverage could once again become meaningful for transaction revenue.

But Bitstamp gives Robinhood another dimension. Instead of depending almost entirely on American retail traders, Robinhood can potentially participate in global and institutional digital-asset activity. The strategic question is therefore no longer simply whether Robinhood users will trade more Bitcoin. It is whether Robinhood can build itself into one of the major regulated gateways between traditional financial markets and crypto markets.

Nivesh Street View

Robinhood’s 61% August crypto rebound is encouraging, but the headline growth rate is not the most important takeaway. Bitstamp is. Total crypto volumes are still significantly below last year, meaning investors should be careful about calling this a full recovery. What has changed, however, is Robinhood’s exposure to the market. Bitstamp contributed more crypto volume than Robinhood’s own app during August and has already given the company access to institutional activity that its traditional retail platform could not easily capture.

There is also a broader strategic advantage emerging. Robinhood no longer needs crypto to perform perfectly every quarter for the entire company to grow. During Q2, crypto revenue fell sharply while total company revenue still reached a record because equities, options, event contracts and other businesses compensated for the decline. That diversification makes Robinhood fundamentally different from a pure cryptocurrency exchange.

If crypto activity strengthens again, Robinhood participates through both retail and institutional channels. If it remains weak, the company increasingly has other revenue engines capable of carrying growth. That may ultimately be more valuable than any single month's trading-volume rebound.

Nivesh Street Bottom Line

August shows that crypto activity can return quickly, but Robinhood’s transformation is the bigger investment story. Crypto volume jumped 61%, Bitstamp generated the majority of that activity and overall platform assets continued moving higher. The year-on-year crypto numbers remain weak, so this is not yet a return to peak enthusiasm. But Robinhood appears to be building something broader than the zero-commission trading app that originally made it famous.

The next phase of Robinhood may be less about getting retail investors to trade more frequently and more about becoming the platform where stocks, options, crypto, prediction markets and eventually other financial assets converge under one ecosystem.
