Buy your next bike online. Here’s how to save more

When Bengaluru-based Anush Shenoy decided to buy a Harley-Davidson motorcycle recently, he placed the order on Amazon instead of visiting a showroom. The decision saved him ₹20,000 on a bike priced at ₹2.86 lakh, a discount of about 7%.

Of this, ₹15,000 came from an Amazon coupon and another ₹5,000 from a credit card offer. “This doesn’t even include the indirect savings in the form of credit card rewards I’ve earned,” he said.

Shenoy had already researched the motorcycle he wanted. On Amazon, he was asked to choose the dealership from which he would collect it. That choice mattered. "While selecting dealers I noticed the ₹15,000 coupon and credit card partnership discount was not available on all dealers. So I picked the one where I could maximize discounts," he said.

He visited the selected dealer after booking, took a test ride and collected the motorcycle the same day. The dealer later said it could not match the online price. “In fact, he charged me a 1% service charge to use the same credit card to pay for RC (registration certificate), insurance and other smaller ancillary charges.”

Shenoy’s experience shows how buying a two-wheeler through e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Flipkart can cost less than purchasing it at a physical store. During the festive season, platforms offer higher discounts and credit card deals.

On the same bike, Amazon is currently offering a ₹15,000 coupon, while the Amazon Pay ICICI credit card provides ₹13,300 cashback, taking the potential upfront savings to ₹28,300. This cashback is limited to Amazon Pay ICICI cards; other ICICI and Axis cards offer discounts of up to ₹11,000.

How does it work?

E-commerce listings show the ex-showroom price, available dealers and applicable bank offers. Buyers select the model, variant and colour, enter their location and choose from the available dealers.

They then pay the ex-showroom price online to book the bike. The dealer subsequently coordinates registration, insurance, KYC and document verification. Road tax, insurance, registration and other charges are payable separately.

Buyers can collect the vehicle from the showroom after a test ride or opt for home delivery if the dealer offers it. Since these purchases are non-refundable, it is better to inspect and test-ride the vehicle before collecting it.

How to maximize discounts and card rewards

The biggest advantage of buying online is the ability to combine platform coupons with instant discounts on credit cards issued by partner banks.

Flipkart is currently offering upfront discounts of 9-11% on BGauss scooters, while Amazon is offering ₹2,500-10,000 off select Hero and Harley-Davidson motorcycles priced at ₹1 lakh or more. Offers vary by location, seller and payment method.

Dealers generally do not offer comparable card discounts and may instead charge a processing fee of 0.5-3% for credit card payments. Buyers should compare the combined benefit available on cards they already hold. A ₹5,000 bank discount on one platform could make it cheaper than another with a larger coupon but no applicable card offer.

Some of the biggest card discounts are available only on EMI transactions. Interest and processing charges can outweigh the upfront savings, so compare the total amount payable rather than the advertised discount alone.

Earn through vouchers

Banks such as HDFC, ICICI and Axis offer additional rewards for buying Amazon Shopping Vouchers or Flipkart gift cards through their rewards portals. These can help maximise reward points on large purchases, said Akash Gupta, a credit card rewards and redemption consultant.

“Amazon shopping vouchers and Flipkart vouchers work on such purchases, which can be bought on multipliers using bank platforms. However, there are monthly caps, so it may not be possible to fund the entire purchase through vouchers, unless you plan in advance and buy vouchers every month for a couple of months,” he said.

For instance, HDFC Bank’s SmartBuy offers 3X-5X reward points on vouchers for most premium credit cards, subject to a monthly accelerated rewards cap of 3,000 points.

Consider a card that earns four points for every ₹200 spent and offers 3X rewards on Amazon vouchers bought through SmartBuy. It would earn 12 points per ₹200 on eligible voucher purchases. Paying directly for a ₹1 lakh bike would earn 2,000 points. Buying ₹30,000 in vouchers at 3X rewards and paying the remaining ₹70,000 directly by card would earn 3,200 points, or 1,200 additional points.

Banks impose monthly limits on voucher purchases and accelerated rewards. Amazon and Flipkart also allow a maximum loading limit of ₹50,000 through vouchers.

Buy vouchers up to the permitted limit and pay the balance by credit card to earn regular rewards or cashback. Before purchasing vouchers, confirm that they can be used to buy the vehicle and combined with bank discounts. These points represent indirect savings, whose value depends on how they are redeemed, not an upfront discount.

Finally, check whether the dealership can match the final online price or offer better financing, insurance or accessories offline.
