Global Market: European shares waver as earnings, rising oil weigh on sentiment
Mixed bank results and rising oil prices weighed on European markets, while energy and technology shares advanced.
The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell 0.16% to 642.64 points by 0811 GMT, as investors weighed contrasting performances among major banking stocks and monitored developments in the energy and technology sectors.
Deutsche Bank shares rose 3.5% after Germany's largest lender reported a 2% increase in third-quarter profit, exceeding analysts' expectations and defying forecasts for a decline. The results provided a boost to the broader European banking sector.
In contrast, shares of Spain's Santander dropped 2.9% following its third-quarter earnings report. The decline weighed on Spain's bank-heavy benchmark, which fell 1%, making it the weakest-performing major European market.
Rising oil prices added to investor caution, with crude gaining more than 2% and dampening risk appetite ahead of the ECB's policy decision on Thursday. The European energy sector bucked the broader market weakness, advancing 0.4%.
Technology stocks also provided support, rising 0.3% as enthusiasm around artificial intelligence investments regained momentum. Investors were also positioning ahead of quarterly earnings from U.S. technology giants Alphabet and Microsoft, scheduled for release after the close of Wall Street trading on Wednesday.
According to Reuters, market participants were balancing company-specific earnings developments against broader economic and monetary policy concerns as they awaited further signals on the outlook for European interest rates.
