Global Market: Why China’s CXMT is putting global memory chip giants under pressure<br>ETMarkets.com

The selloff spread across Asian and US markets as investors reassessed the outlook for memory chipmakers that have benefited from surging demand for AI-related applications. The move also renewed concerns about elevated valuations across the AI sector and whether heavy investment in the technology will generate sustainable returns.

South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index fell 5.5% on Tuesday, with shares of SK Hynix plunging more than 10% and Samsung Electronics declining 7.4%. The sharp volatility prompted a temporary trading halt in the South Korean market. Japan’s Nikkei 225 also fell 1.8%, reflecting broader weakness in technology stocks.

In the US, Micron shares came under pressure, while other semiconductor companies and data storage stocks also declined. According to Reuters, Micron fell to its lowest level since September 16, extending its losing streak as investors reacted to the Chinese company’s reported technological progress and concerns about AI-related spending.

Why CXMT’s breakthrough matters

CXMT, one of China’s leading memory chip manufacturers, has reportedly made significant progress on a new memory chip architecture designed to pack more data into a smaller physical space. The development could improve memory density and efficiency, potentially strengthening the company’s competitiveness against established global manufacturers.

The company specialises in dynamic random-access memory (DRAM), a type of semiconductor used in computers, smartphones, data centres and AI infrastructure. DRAM temporarily stores data that processors need to access quickly.

The reported development has raised concerns that Chinese manufacturers could narrow the technological gap with global industry leaders and eventually intensify pricing pressure.

Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron dominate the global DRAM market. Improvements in CXMT’s manufacturing capabilities could challenge their market positions, particularly in conventional memory products, where competition is sensitive to pricing and supply.

However, progress in chip architecture does not necessarily translate into immediate commercial success. Manufacturing advanced memory chips at scale requires sophisticated production capabilities, reliable yields, substantial investment and access to advanced semiconductor equipment.

Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron face different risks

The three established memory chipmakers face varying degrees of exposure to CXMT’s advances, depending on their product portfolios and technological capabilities.

Samsung and SK Hynix face potential competition in conventional DRAM, while Micron could also come under pressure if Chinese manufacturers expand production and offer competitive alternatives.

The stakes are particularly high because memory prices and profitability can change sharply when supply grows faster than demand. If CXMT successfully expands capacity and advances its technology, the resulting competition could constrain pricing power across parts of the industry.

At the same time, the competitive threat remains uncertain. CXMT still faces challenges in scaling production and accessing the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment amid US-led restrictions on technology exports to China.

The company’s progress therefore represents a potential medium-term challenge rather than proof that it can immediately match the production capabilities and advanced product portfolios of its larger rivals.

AI boom faces fresh scrutiny

The chip selloff also reflects growing investor sensitivity to the sustainability of the AI investment boom. Semiconductor stocks have rallied sharply this year on expectations that expanding AI infrastructure will drive strong demand for processors, memory chips and data storage.

However, investors are increasingly questioning whether the anticipated growth in AI spending will justify the high valuations of companies benefiting from the trend.

Comments from Broadcom Chief Executive Hock Tan, who warned about excessive expectations among AI investors, added to the cautious mood. His remarks reinforced concerns that some technology stocks could be vulnerable if returns from AI investments fail to materialise as quickly as expected.

According to Reuters, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 1.5% on Tuesday, marking its fifth consecutive daily decline and taking it to its lowest level in about four weeks.

The weakness extended beyond memory manufacturers. Data storage companies SanDisk, Seagate Technology and Western Digital also recorded losses, while Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices and other semiconductor stocks traded lower.

What investors will watch next

Investors will closely monitor whether CXMT can turn its reported design progress into commercially viable products and expand its manufacturing capacity. The pace of that expansion will be key to determining whether the company becomes a significant competitive threat to global memory suppliers.

Developments in memory pricing, supply-demand conditions and demand from AI data centres will also shape the sector’s outlook.

For now, the market reaction highlights the vulnerability of highly valued semiconductor stocks to signs of intensifying competition. While AI-related demand remains an important growth driver, stronger Chinese rivals could complicate the outlook for established chipmakers by pressuring margins and challenging expectations of sustained profitability.

The latest selloff does not establish that CXMT has overtaken its global competitors. Instead, it signals that investors are increasingly factoring China’s technological advances into their assessment of risks facing the global semiconductor industry.
