Johnson & Johnson stock rout: What's driving the sharp decline?

Economic Times Markets
Published 14 Oct 2026, 06:53 am IST

Johnson & Johnson shares fell sharply on October 13, with losses reaching about 6.8% during intraday trading, despite the healthcare giant raising its full-year earnings outlook. Investors focused on weak reported profits and uneven performance across its business segments. (Source: GuruFocus, Investing.com)

Profit plunges 96% in September quarter

J&J reported third-quarter net earnings of $210 million, or 9 cents per share, down sharply from $5.15 billion a year earlier. A large one-time charge linked to its proposed talc litigation resolution, alongside acquisition and collaboration-related items, weighed on reported earnings.

3/5

Drug business grows, but medical devices lag

J&J’s Innovative Medicine business recorded revenue growth of 7.7%, while its MedTech division grew just 2.5% to about $8.6 billion. The device business missed analyst expectations for a second consecutive quarter, raising concerns about the breadth of the company’s growth.

4/5

Higher full-year earnings forecast fails to impress

The company raised its 2026 adjusted earnings-per-share guidance by 6 cents to a midpoint of $11.10. Third-quarter adjusted EPS came in at $2.59, above analyst expectations of $2.53, but remained 7.5% below the year-earlier level. The modest outlook increase did little to offset investor concerns.

5/5

Investors weigh valuation against growth risks

J&J’s quarterly sales rose 5.9% to $25.4 billion, but lower adjusted earnings, MedTech weakness and litigation-related charges overshadowed the revenue growth. Investors will look for stronger device sales and sustained pharmaceutical momentum to determine whether the company can justify its valuation and deliver on its improved annual outlook.
