NCC: Seven factors that will shape its prospects over the next five years

When a stock loses 42% of its value in a year, investors have reason to worry. Is the business deteriorating, or is the share price reflecting broader weakness in the market?

That is a question NCC investors may be asking. While the stock’s decline is steep, it does not necessarily mean the company’s fundamentals have weakened to the same extent. Broader market conditions may also be weighing on the shares.

So, what could determine NCC’s performance over the next five years? Its order book, execution capabilities, profitability, working capital management and growth opportunities will all play a role. Before examining these factors, here is a brief look at the company.

NCC Ltd is a Hyderabad-based infrastructure and construction company established in 1978 as Nagarjuna Construction Company.

The company undertakes engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) projects across several sectors, including buildings, roads and highways, bridges, metro rail, railways, water supply, sewage treatment, irrigation, power transmission and distribution, and mining.

Its building portfolio includes hospitals, housing complexes, commercial buildings, IT parks and sports facilities. NCC executes projects across India for government agencies, public-sector enterprises and private-sector clients.

Seven factors that could shape NCC’s prospects over the next five years:

A strong order book

For an infrastructure company, the order book provides an indication of potential future revenue. NCC appears well positioned on this front.

As of 30 June 2026, the company had an order book of ₹81,214 crore, spread across seven business verticals. This provides revenue visibility over the medium term, although actual revenue will depend on how quickly projects are executed.

NCC also has an established project management framework, in-house design and engineering capabilities, and experience delivering large and complex infrastructure projects.

The challenge will be to translate this sizeable order book into revenue and cash flow without compromising profitability.

Execution capabilities

A large order book is valuable only if a company can execute projects on time and within budget. Execution will therefore be central to NCC’s growth over the coming years.

The company has more than 48 years of experience across buildings, transportation, water, railways, electrical transmission and distribution, irrigation, and mining.

Management expects revenue growth to be driven by the systematic execution of the existing order book, supported by project mobilisation across business segments and the company’s execution capabilities.

The pace of project execution will be important in determining whether NCC can meet its growth targets.

Quality of earnings

Revenue growth alone does not tell the full story. Profitability and the quality of earnings are equally important.

NCC’s management says it is prioritising profitable growth over business volume, with a focus on project selection and cost management.

On a consolidated basis, the company’s EBITDA margin expanded to 9.4% in Q1 FY27 from 8.8% in Q1 FY26. Consolidated EBITDA and profit after tax (PAT) also increased year-on-year.

Maintaining this improvement will be important as the company executes its order book. Higher revenue will translate into better shareholder returns only if margins remain healthy and profits are supported by cash generation.

Working capital management

Working capital is a critical consideration for construction and engineering companies, where payments can be linked to project milestones and certification processes.

NCC’s management has identified working capital management as a key priority. The company is focusing on accelerating collections, reducing unbilled revenue and shortening the cash conversion cycle across its project portfolio.

Progress on these fronts will help determine how efficiently NCC converts reported earnings into cash. Weak collections or delays in billing can tie up funds, increase financing requirements and constrain the company’s ability to take on new projects.

Growth and diversification

Beyond its core EPC business, NCC’s smart-meter special-purpose vehicles (SPVs) could provide a longer-duration, annuity-based income stream, helping diversify its revenue base.

Its presence across seven business verticals also positions the company to pursue civil and structural work associated with large national infrastructure programmes.

These opportunities could support growth over the longer term. However, their contribution will depend on project execution, the pace of deployment and the financial returns generated by the investments.

Project execution environment

NCC’s performance will also depend on factors beyond its direct control.

Infrastructure projects can be delayed by funding constraints, client approvals, land availability, utility shifting and delays in achieving billing milestones. Such disruptions can affect revenue recognition, cash flows and project profitability.

Management says it is working to mitigate these risks through disciplined project planning, execution and stakeholder engagement.

How effectively NCC manages these challenges will influence its ability to meet delivery schedules and protect margins.

FY27 guidance

For FY27, management has guided for revenue growth of 8-10% and an EBITDA margin of around 9%.

These targets provide a near-term benchmark against which investors can assess the company’s performance. Revenue growth within the guided range, alongside stable margins and improved cash conversion, would support the case for steady operating progress.

However, investors will need to track actual results against this guidance, particularly as execution and working capital remain important variables.

At ₹120, NCC trades at a P/E ratio of 10.2 and a price-to-book value ratio of 1.

These metrics may help investors assess the stock’s valuation, but they do not establish whether it is cheap or expensive on their own. That judgement also depends on the company’s earnings outlook, cash flows, balance sheet and ability to execute its order book.

Where could NCC’s stock trade five years from now?

NCC’s share price over the next five years will depend on its ability to turn its substantial order book into sustained revenue growth, profits and cash flows.

Growth in roads, buildings, water infrastructure and other construction projects could support its expansion. Its diversified business portfolio and smart-meter operations may also provide additional growth opportunities.

However, investors should monitor the pace of order execution, working capital requirements, debt levels, profit margins and the risk of project delays. A growing order book alone does not guarantee higher shareholder returns.

The stock’s future performance will ultimately depend on how well NCC converts its business opportunities into profitable growth and whether its valuation adequately reflects those prospects.

Investors should assess the company’s fundamentals, corporate governance and valuation as part of their due diligence before making investment decisions.

Happy investing.
