Tata Trusts vs Tata Sons: FM Sitharaman urges ‘maturity' from leadership; why did she refuse to interfere in dispute?

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman weighed in on the Tata Group fiasco on Monday, saying that the differences within the organisation (namely between Tata Trusts and Tata Sons) need to be resolved amicably among the stakeholders through dialogue.

The FM also stressed that given the group's significant contribution to the Indian economy, the matter has wider significance.

Sitharaman made her observations while she was speaking at the Financial Express Leadership Awards 2026. She said that those involved in the dispute need to show maturity as well as commercial understanding. She also said that the government would not be comment in a hurry on a matter which needs to be settled internally.

"These are very delicate matters and matters where a lot of commercial and business acumen will have to work," ANI quoted her as saying.

Sitharaman made the comment while replying to a question on whether the government should get involved or intervene in the ongoing tensions within the group.

Sitharaman said that she was aware of the brand value of the Tata Group, where it stands globally as a conglomerate, and the contributions of the Parsi community in building the Tata institution. She also spoke of the wide range of activities and businesses of the Tata Group, describing it as a critical component of the Indian economy.

"It has to be amicably settled among themselves. So they talk it out to make sure that it comes back quickly to some normalcy. It cannot be spilling out like this in the public," Sitharaman said as per ANI.

The finance minister, however, declined to comment on whether the government would bring the two sides to the table for a possible compromise.

"For the maturity of that leadership, we would like to have the scene settled sooner. That's the view," she said.

The Noel Tata-led Tata Trusts owns 66% of Tata Sons. It opposed the September reappointment of Chandrasekaran and has clashed with him over Air India's mounting losses and a planned exit by minority shareholder Shapoorji Pallonji Group, apart from the listing of the holding company.

Regulatory pressure, meanwhile, has intensified, with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rejecting Tata Sons' application to deregister as a non-banking financial company, a decision that pushes it closer to a stock market listing.

Tata Sons' board has favoured listing, to comply with Reserve Bank of India rules, but controlling shareholder Tata Trusts has opposed it and sought alternatives.
